BSC Group’s work to design drainage improvements for the Pine Orchard Yacht Club in Branford, CT was spotlighted by Club + Resort Business, a publication targeted to the resort and sports club industry.
Located on the Long Island Sound, several portions of the golf course were subject to frequent tidal flooding and intense storm events. BSC Group designed and permitted a series of improvements that not only resolved the flooding issues but also helped to improve course play and highlighted coastal vistas.
“We took the two or three worst spots on the golf course and made them the best,” said Pine Orchard’s Golf Course Superintendent Wes Mackie.
BSC developed comprehensive solutions to the site’s ecological and drainage problems, including invasive species management, relocation of a creek, and expanding the tidal marsh pond to detain stormwater.
BSC’s design has weathered the storm, experiencing no flooding following Hurricane Isaias in 2020. “We lost power, and we lost trees,” said Mackie. “But there was no flooding.”
Longtime club member Nick Torello added, “We haven’t lost one day from sitting water. We used to lose eight to 10 days a year.”
