Edna Bynoe was a dedicated community activist in Boston from the 1970s to the 1990s, passionately advocating for improvements and resources in Roxbury. Her tireless efforts to enhance the quality of life for local residents left a lasting impact on the community. The playground named in her honor serves as a testament to her contributions and continues to be a space where children and families can gather and enjoy safe, engaging recreational activities. BSC attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the park on August 1st and had the pleasure of meeting Mayor Michelle Wu. It was a joyous occasion, highlighted by watching the children enjoy the newly renovated playground.
BSC led the design for complete renovations to the Edna Bynoe Playground located in Orchard Park within the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston for the Boston Parks and Recreation Department.
Located on the south end of the park, the playground suffered from years of deferred maintenance, age, and loss of play value. BSC’s team provided survey, engineering, landscape architecture design services, bid document preparation, and construction phase services.
The design of the playground offers an exciting opportunity to honor and celebrate residents’ memories while also looking to the future and considering the next generation of users. Improvements include all-new playground equipment for both toddlers and school-aged children, new fencing, water spray features, and site amenities such as benches, tables, shade structures, and drinking water fountains.
Key BSC contributors to the project included Jesse Harris, Douglas Morse, Ricardo Austrich, Jef Fasser, Rachel Salch, Casey-Lee Bastien, Dom Rinaldi, Chris Thomas, and Mackenzie Morrison!
