Kieran Healy, Land Surveyor at BSC Group, and his 15-year old son Alan staffed a complimentary refreshment station for cape travelers over the July 4th holiday weekend. The refreshment station, operated by Yarmouth Port Boy Scout Troop 50, offers free coffee, tea, hot chocolate, water, fruit punch, and snacks. It operates out of a Korean War-era olive green canvas tent located at the rest area between exits 6 and 7 on the eastbound side of Route 6. The tent is staffed for 48 hours, from noon on Friday until noon on Sunday during Memorial Day, 4th July, Labor Day, and Columbus Day weekends.
The refreshment station has been operating for about 50 years to help keep travelers awake, to give them a break and to give them the chance to talk with Cape Cod locals. In return, the scouts get the opportunity to help others, volunteer, and interact with many different people. Alan and his fellow scouts are working on earning merit badges, which help them in their journey to become Eagle Scouts.
